Updated Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 boosters available at Pandemic Operations Center

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The updated Pfizer and Moderna bivalent COVID-19 booster shots are now available at the New Hanover County Pandemic Operations Center. This booster is specifically designed to build protection from both the alpha and omicron variant of COVID-19.

A booster must be given at least 2 months after an individual receives their initial vaccine series or last booster dose. Updated Pfizer boosters have been authorized for anyone 12 and older and the Moderna booster is authorized for those 18 and older. These updated boosters have not been authorized for children ages 5-11, but updated guidance is expected in the coming weeks.

“We are excited to begin offering the new COVID-19 boosters to members of our community,” said Pandemic Operations manager Jon Campbell. “These boosters are much like the annual flu shot that is updated every year based on what strain of flu is circulating. The data for these new boosters shows increased protection against BA.4 and BA.5 variants, the most dominant variants of COVID nationally and locally. The more tailored immunity should help us be better prepared and help prevent severe illness this upcoming winter season.”

The Pandemic Operations Center is continuing to provide COVID-19 resources including vaccines, boosters and on-site testing at no cost to the public. Members of the community are also encouraged to pick up free at-home tests and masks during operating hours.
