[ARCHIVED] Residents asked to join county in Operation Green Light to honor veterans

Front of Health & Human Services lit in green lights.NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – As Veterans Day approaches, New Hanover County residents are encouraged to participate in Operation Green Light, a national initiative to honor the service and sacrifice of our country’s veterans.

From November 7-13, residents can display a green light in the window or outside of their home or business signifying recognition of veterans in the area and letting them know they are seen, appreciated and supported. The exterior of the New Hanover County Health and Human Services building, located at 1650 Greenfield Street, will be lit in green during this time to honor these brave individuals who have served the country.

“We are so grateful that the Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution in October supporting the county’s participation in Operation Green Light,” said Veteran Services Officer Betsy Graham. “Veterans play such a crucial role in helping our community thrive and this initiative is just a small way of showing that we recognize their past service, their contributions now and are here to support them in any way possible.”

More than 15,000 veterans currently reside in New Hanover County and the county’s Veteran Services Department assists an average of 2,000 local veterans and their family members each year to help them understand, navigate and receive the benefits they are entitled to through the Department of Veteran Affairs. North Carolina is home to more than 600,000 veterans and New Hanover County joins 18 other counties in the state currently committed to taking part in Operation Green Light.
