New Hanover County Equity and Inclusion Summit set for September 14-15

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Registration is now open for the second annual New Hanover County Equity and Inclusion Summit.

The event, which will take place September 14-15, will be held at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station (502 North Front Street, Wilmington). Individuals interested in taking part can register online by clicking here.

“We are so excited to once again collaborate with the YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear to host this learning opportunity here in New Hanover County,” said Chief Diversity and Equity Officer Linda Thompson. “Last year, we had an engaging summit that allowed members of our community and representatives from across the state to discuss important DEI-related topics taking place here at home, as well as across the country. This year, we look forward to expanding that conversation as we aim to provide attendees insight that will help them navigate today’s challenges while working to build more inclusive communities.”

The 2023 summit will feature discussions and panels focused on an array of topics, including health and cultural equity, youth, and transgender issues, exploring the world of visual and hearing impairments, developing an action plan for land acknowledgements and the inclusion of Indigenous People and much more.

Ashley Lomboy from the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe of North Carolina will serve as the keynote speaker for the summit during Thursday’s luncheon. In February, Lomboy and her family challenged a local charter school after their son was discriminated against for having long hair, something that was not recognized by the school as an exemption for his culture and religion. Lomboy has been a long-standing community leader and advocate for Indigenous People and continues to be champion for acceptance and inclusion.
