[ARCHIVED] Health and Human Services ready to assist community with Medicaid expansion rollout

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Medicaid expansion will officially take effect on December 1, allowing more North Carolina residents, ages 19 through 64, access to health-related coverage for doctor visits, yearly check-ups, emergency care, mental health services and more, at little or no cost.

New Hanover County residents are encouraged to review Medicaid qualifications and apply through the ePASS portal to receive these benefits. To assist, staff from the New Hanover County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are ready to help individuals understand if they qualify for this expanded coverage and guide them through the application process as needed.

“We are certainly excited about the coming expansion of Medicaid benefits, which will provide even more New Hanover County residents with access to the healthcare they need,” said Social Services Director Tonya Jackson. “While the application can easily be completed at home through the online portal, we know people still might have questions or need additional clarification. We have added additional staff to our Social Services team and they are ready to guide people through the process.”

To be eligible for Medicaid benefits, an individual must:

  • Be a United States citizen*, ages 19-64, living in North Carolina
  • Have a household income that is below 138 percent of the federal poverty level. (That’s about $20,000 for a single adult or about $34,000 for a family of three.)

* Some non-U.S. citizens can get health care coverage through Medicaid. To learn more, go to medicaid.ncdhhs.gov.

Applying for Medicaid can be done online at ePASS.nc.gov. Individuals can also submit a paper application or apply in person at New Hanover County Health and Human Services located at 1650 Greenfield Street. North Carolina residency documents, verification of income and a social security number or immigration documents must be provided to meet eligibility requirements.
